Charles Daniel (Danny) Towns, of Apalachicola, Florida, passed away peacefully on Sunday, July 5, 2026, in Panama City, Florida, at the age of 79.
He was born on August 29, 1946, in Port St. Joe, Florida, and as a young boy, his family moved to Waycross, Georgia, where he completed high school. Pursuing higher education, he attended Valdosta State College, earning a Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting.
With a deep sense of duty and courage, Danny answered his country’s call and served in the United States Army from 1966 to 1969. As a Vietnam Combat Veteran, he was a member of the special forces, serving bravely as a Green Beret and Paratrooper. Danny's military achievements are numerous and distinguished: he was awarded the Bronze Star, the National Defense Service Medal, the Vietnam Campaign Medal, the Parachute Badge, and the Combat Infantryman’s Badge. He was proud to be associated with both the 82nd Airborne and the 173rd Airborne divisions, and his service remains a remarkable chapter in his life story.
After his time in the military, Charles worked with the Railroad in Waycross, Georgia and later moved to Apalachicola where he worked with for his cousin, in the seafood business, D.W. Wilson Seafood. Later he embarked on a long and successful career as a Tax Auditor for the State of Florida, in West Palm Beach and Tallahassee area. He worked diligently for many years until his retirement.
Outside of his professional and military achievements, Danny was a man of many interests. He loved watching football and baseball. He enjoyed playing golf, shooting pool, fishing, playing softball, and coaching women's softball.
He is survived by his cherished daughter Kimberly Towns of Apalachicola, Florida; one sister and caregiver, Joy Towns of Apalachicola, Florida; one brother Allen Hugh Towns (Mary Katherine) of Thomasville, Georgia; former spouse and caregiver, Carolyn Towns of Waycross, Georgia, and a host of cousins, nieces and nephews.
Danny was preceded in death by his father, Daniel Hugh Towns, and his mother, Myrtice Eloise Wilson Towns.
A graveside service with military honors will be held at 10:30 a.m. Eastern Time on Saturday, July 11, 2026, at Magnolia Cemetery in Apalachicola, Florida. Family, friends, and all who wish to pay their respects are invited to attend and celebrate a life that was well lived, marked by service, dedication, and love.
Arrangements are entrusted to the caring staff of Comforter Funeral Home in Port St. Joe, Florida.
