CJ Land, a beloved resident of Wewahitchka, Florida, passed away peacefully on Saturday, September 6, 2025, at the age of 90, surrounded by his family at Clifford Sim’s Veterans Nursing Home in Panama City, Florida. Born on June 2, 1935, in Grand Ridge, Florida, CJ lived a life marked by service and generosity, leaving behind a rich legacy of love and kindness.
CJ dedicated two decades of his professional life to the postal service in Panama City, Florida, where he was known not only for his commitment to his job but also for the warmth he brought to his community. Prior to his retirement, he served in the United States Army for a remarkable total of 22 years, which included two tours in Vietnam and fifteen years of being stationed out of the country. It was also in Hawaii, during his service, that he met his beloved wife, Mildred H. Land, with whom he shared 36 wonderful years of marriage.
Known for his giving nature, CJ was always ready to lend a helping hand. He would often rise at 3:00 AM to prepare coffee at the Wewa Jr. Food Store, where he would enjoy the company of local patrons, fostering a sense of community. His kindness extended beyond the store; he made it a mission to distribute vegetables to those in need, embodying the spirit of generosity that defined him.
CJ held a deep respect for law enforcement, forming notable connections with individuals such as Sheriff Frank McKeithen and Captain Joe Nugent, who later became Sheriff himself. His friendship with Sheriff Mike Harrison was particularly cherished, and it was with a sense of peace that he allowed Sheriff Harrison to hold his driver’s license when it became unsafe for him to continue driving.
In addition to his dedication to service, CJ found joy in dancing, often seen performing a little jig when entering businesses, bringing smiles to many faces. His vibrant personality and love for life will be missed dearly.
CJ is survived by his two daughters, Mary (Charles) Holley and Bobbie (Elwood) Sandridge, both of Wewahitchka, Florida. He is also survived by his sister, Thelma Fulford of Jacksonville, Florida; grandchildren Heather (Rod) Pippin, Nicki (Lawson) Horne, Jackie (Derrick) Newcomb, all of Wewahitchka, Florida, and Greg Sandridge of Clermont, Florida; as well as ten great-grandchildren, seven great-great-grandchildren, and one great-great-great-grandchild.
He is predeceased by his wife, Mildred H. Land; his parents, John and Mary Pittman Land; five sisters; four brothers; and three special grandchildren.
