Equilla Jean Mills

Equilla Jean Sapp Mills, lovingly known to family and friends as Equilla, passed away in Wewahitchka, Florida on Sunday, August 2, 2026, at the age of 84. She departed this world peacefully at home, surrounded by her family, leaving behind a legacy enriched by love, warmth, and cherished memories.

Born on January 19, 1942, in Columbus, Georgia, Equilla’s life was anchored by a steadfast devotion to her family and a deep appreciation for the roots from which she came. 

Equilla devoted forty years to her home in Hampton, Georgia, where she was a devoted homemaker and the heart of her family. Her home was a place of comfort and laughter, where traditions and stories were lovingly passed down. Later, she spent two decades in Thomaston, Georgia before moving to Wewahitchka in 2021, where she continued to nurture her family and pursue the passions that brought her joy.

A woman with a keen interest in ancestry, Equilla took great pleasure in researching her family history. With determined dedication, she traced her lineage back to the 1400’s, often spending hours in cemeteries unearthing connections between generations. Her deep bond with her sisters was one of the hallmarks of her life; together they shared their closest secrets, strengthening the fabric of their family.

Equilla found joy in simple pleasures, cherishing the times spent playing cards—especially spirited games of Rook—with her siblings and extended family. Together with her beloved husband, Hubert Delon Mills, she relished watching Atlanta Braves baseball, thrilling NASCAR races, and their favorite television show, The Young and the Restless. Friends and family knew well that during that beloved television hour, Equilla and Hubert were not to be disturbed.

Her days were also brightened by brimming flower beds. Equilla loved tending to her yard, where she planted flowers and delighted in the beauty of nature. These quiet moments spoke to her gentle soul and appreciation for nurturing life in all its forms.

Equilla’s legacy is carried on through her loving family. She is survived by her son, Michael David Mills; her grandchildren, Travis Mills, Cassie Mills Cook, Benjamin Mills, Leeanna Mills, Michael Mills, Ryan Hunnicutt, and Mandy Ventress.

She reunites in peaceful rest with her husband, Hubert Delon Mills; her sons, Billy Dewayne Mills and Richard Emmett Mills; her mother, Mary Virginia Head Sapp; her brother, Billy Sapp; and her sisters, Georgeann Savage and Patsy Posey, who all preceded her in death.

The family will receive friends and loved ones at a graveside service to honor Equilla’s memory. The service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on August 6, 2026, at Christian Home Baptist Church Cemetery, 407 Nathan Road, Slocomb, Alabama.

Equilla Jean Mills will be lovingly remembered for her unwavering dedication to family, her keen curiosity about her history, and the warmth she brought to every life she touched. Her legacy will endure in the hearts of all who knew her.
