Richard Wayne Stevens, a devoted father, proud grandfather, loyal friend, and legendary coach, was born on July 22, 1944, in Creola, Alabama. He passed away peacefully on June 27, 2025, in Port Saint Joe, Florida, entering into eternal rest with his Lord and Savior.
To the Port St. Joe community, he will always be known as Coach Stevens—a name synonymous with dedication, leadership, and heart. To his grandchildren, he was simply and lovingly Grandpa Coach. His passion for PSJ football and the entire athletic program was unmatched, and his influence will be felt for generations.
Over more than 30 years of coaching and teaching, Coach Stevens became a pillar of Port St. Joe athletics. In 2016, his contributions were honored with his induction into the Port St. Joe Athletic Hall of Fame. His love for mentoring young people and shaping their futures through sports and education defined his life’s work. His legacy lives on in the stories, values, and spirit he instilled in all who knew him.
Wayne was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph T. Stevens and Willie Dean Stevens.
He is survived by his loving family: his son, Ezekiel Stevens, and daughter-in-law, Amy Stevens; his daughter, Gretchen Lea Schweers, and son-in-law, Michael John Schweers; and his adored grandchildren, Sofi Ana Schweers and John Michael Schweers.
Wayne Stevens lived a life rooted in faith, service, and love. His memory will continue to inspire and uplift all who were fortunate enough to know him.
Graveside services will be held on Thursday, July 3, 2025 at Holly Hill Cemetery with a time of visitation beginning at 9:30 A.M. Eastern Time and the service at 10:00 A.m. Eastern Time with Dr. Steve Taylor officiating.
