Steven Craig Burkett, age 56, known fondly as Craig, was born on February 21, 1969, in Port St. Joe and passed away at his home in Howard Creek, Florida, on Sunday, July 6, 2025. A beloved son, brother, and father, Craig leaves behind a legacy of kindness and dedication to family and friends.
Craig's professional life was marked by his talent and specialization as a floor man, particularly in tile installation. His meticulous workmanship brought beauty to countless homes around Gulf County.
He was also a proud veteran, having served his country in the United States Navy. His commitment to service underscored his love for the United States of America and its cherished values.
Craig's educational journey began at Faith Christian School, where he nurtured his growing love for Christ. He later graduated from Port St. Joe High School. His faith was a guiding force throughout his life, enriching the relationships he built with family and friends.
A man of many interests, Craig found joy in hobbies that spanned from model cars and planes to riding 3 Wheelers, dirt bike racing and skateboarding. He shared many cherished moments with his son, Zach, often at the track, where their passion for racing came to life. Though he never sought the limelight, Craig was always involved in the sport of baseball, enjoying the spirit of teamwork and camaraderie. His humility and love for those around him will be deeply missed yet cherished by all who had the privilege of knowing him. Craig’s creative spirit shone through in his ability to build numerous wood camps and forts in the woods, which became a playground for family and friends. In his later years, he developed an enthusiasm for building and racing R/C cars.
Craig's personality was brightened by his love for family and friends, as well as his beloved pets. He was a devoted son to his mother, Bunnie Gainnie, and his stepfather, Jimmie Gainnie. Additionally, he is survived by his sister, Kay Hinote; brother, Scott Burkett; and stepbrother, Griff Gainnie. Craig's pride in his son, Zach Burkett, was evident in all that he did, a bond that will be remembered fondly.
He was preceded in death by the love of his life, Amy Chavous, his father, Bobby L. Burkett and one brother, Brian Burkett.
Services for Craig will be held at Oak Grove Church in Port St. Joe on Saturday, July 12, 2025 with visitation starting at 10:00 A.M. Eastern Time and the Memorial Service following at 11:00 A.M. with military honors.
With a heart full of love and a life well-lived, Steven Craig Burkett will forever remain in the hearts of his family and friends.
