Walter Murphy Smith 86 of Port St. Joe, Florida passed away on Friday, June 5, 2026. He was born on December 28, 1939 in West Bay Grand Cayman (Cayman Islands) British West Indies to the late Ross and Edna Smith. As a young man he worked on boats for the tourist and later became a merchant marine.

Walter moved to the United States in 1958 where he married his first wife of sixteen years, Greta. He later met his forever wife Sharryn and remained married for forty-three years.

After moving to America, Walter worked with a construction company making concrete beams until the company closed. Fifteen years before retiring, he went to work with the county at the waste water plant. 

He was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Douglas Jackson, step granddaughter, Mina, and one brother, Carl Smith.

Walter leaves behind his wife, Sharryn, Smith; step daughter, Hope Becker (Brian Ramey); step grandson, Daniel Beddow (Dawn) and Robert Becker (Casey); step granddaughters, Cora and Hera; sister, Gen Henning; brothers, Jimmy Smith (Gladys) and Clifton Smith (Karen) and sister in law, Rose Smith. He also leaves behind many nieces, nephews, and numerous cousins.

A memorial service will be held at the First Presbyterian Church in Wewahitchka, Florida on Saturday, June 13, 2026 at 1:00 P.M. Central Time.

Arrangements are entrusted to the caring staff of Comforter Funeral Home in Port St. Joe, Florida.
